Harney Lane Winery and Vineyards

Harney Lane Winery and Vineyards is one of the 85+ wineries in the Lodi region of California, but their story is uniquely their own.

The Harney Lane team prides themselves on being farmers first, and they’re serious when they say great wine starts in the vineyard. The land has been tended by the Mettler family for 5 generations, and the family originally used the land exclusively for farming starting in 1906 and growing winegrapes in 1907. They boast 120 acres of vineyards, up to 118 years old. The Lizzy James Vineyard is a Certified Historic Vineyard, planted all the way back in 1904. This actually qualifies as an “ancient vine”, or a vine over 100 years old. Lodi is one of the few American wine regions with ancient vines! In 2006, Harney Lane made the shift to begin producing exceptional wines from their estate vineyards, and launched the winery in 2008.

Harney Lane Winery and Vineyards is proud to be family owned and operated. During your visit, it’s likely you’ll run into one of the 3 owners, Kathy, Jorja, or Kyle!  The family lives on property to this day, honoring tradition and tending to the land and the business.

They personally manage every element of their winemaking, from vineyard to barrel to bottle. Everything is done on-site, with no outsourcing, from growing and harvesting the vines to bottling and distribution. All teams work together in harmony, from the farmers to the tasting room attendants, to produce a range of wines. Harney Lane produces mostly single vineyard varietal, meaning almost all of their wines are produced from one vineyard, and not blendended with other varietals (oftentimes a rarity in the industry!). The varietal listed on the label, such as Chardonnay, is all that you’ll find in the bottle.

At the time of writing, Harney Lane offers a variety of wine options to choose from: Albarino, Chardonnay, Dry Rose, Rose of Primitivo, Zinfandel, Old Vine Zinfandel, Tempranillo, Petite Sirah, Primitivo, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Port.

If you’re looking for a wine with a give-back aspect, you’ll love the Patriarch’s Promise. Inspired by the family patriarch George Mettler, the Patriarch’s Promise has become a Harney Lane staple since its first release in 2012. 10% of proceeds are donated to the American Cancer Society in honor of George. Go ahead and try to guess the contents of this Harney Lane classic; this proprietary wine’s recipe is a closely guarded family secret!

For those interested in sustainability, you’ll be happy to know that Harney Lane’s 100% estate-grown wines are meticulously made with sustainably farmed vineyards and are consciously crafted to be gluten-free, vegan friendly, and with no unnecessary additives.

Harney Lane Winery is LODI RULES Certified, which is an impressive and prestigious sustainability certification known worldwide. When you see the LODI RULES and Certified Green seals at Harney Lane, you know that the wine you’re drinking has been produced using verified, scientifically-sound sustainable farming. Back in 1991, Lodi farmers banded together to form an organization dedicated to improving farming for everyone in the community. Every 5 years, Lodi farmers vote on a grape tax that funds the education and research for responsible farming. “When you drink a glass of wine made from LODI RULES certified grapes, you are supporting a farmer, a vintner, and an entire agricultural community that embraces their responsibility to care for the environment and the people.” (https://www.lodirules.org/)

The Lodi wine region has 85+ wineries to its name, and you’ll get a different experience at each and every winery you visit. At Harney Lane Winery and Vineyards, you can enjoy their well-crafted wines in an elegant and tranquil setting, and rest easy knowing your wine was sustainably produced by dedicated family farmers. Next time you’re in the mood for a Lodi wine tasting, be sure to head over to Harney Lane Winery and Vineyards.
